Nikbo | become the earth project

Work Sample for Gerbode Foundation Music Award 2023

OVERVIEW: Become the Earth is a live music experience addressing the grief of the immigrant experience, particularly for people from colonized countries. Weaving together music, nature, storytelling, and ritual, this event asks: “What have we lost—personally and collectively—because of colonization? And what becomes possible when we acknowledge and tend to these losses together?” Performing a concert that culminates in an innovative audience-generated sound bath, Filipinx artist Nikbo invites people to gently investigate this question, and look for a way forward with the support of our communities and the more-than-human world.

Below are three samples of my recent work that illustrate the musical and community-engagement potential for Become the Earth.

You Are A Wonder (2022)

Music + Lyrics: Nikbo
Music Producer: Chelsey Sellona
Videography: Mogli Maureal

Start and End Times: 00:00 - 4:01

Things to Note:

  • Relationship With Nature: The themes of this song reflect the themes that will be present throughout Become the Earth, specifically learning to see ourselves as part of Nature instead of separate from it. I wrote this song as a love letter for my gender-non-conforming sibling, who was struggling with feeling out of place because of how they identify.
Embedded in the track, if you listen closely, you can hear whale song, wind, and ocean sounds.

  • Community Engagement:

    • The spoken samples you hear in the beginning and the middle of the song are excerpts from love letters that Lavender Phoenix organizers wrote for their community. Lavender Phoenix is a community organization that builds Queer and Trans API power in the Bay Area.

    • The video documents the “release party” I organized for the song. Instead of a traditional concert, I invited friends and fans to participate in a COVID-safe sound bath in the Oakland Redwoods. An example of the ways I love to engage my community and provide opportunities for connection, presence, and healing.

BIG FOREHEAD (2022)

Music + Lyrics: Nikbo
Music Producer: JOhn Caviness

Start and End Time: 00:00-3:24

Things to Note:

This is one of the songs from my Kultivate Labs/Balay Kreative-sponsored project, Breathe Underwater. In the Summer of 2022, I traveled to Calgary to interview my family about their experiences as immigrants. I wrote this song inspired by one of the interviews with my Auntie Guing-Guing. I performed this song at the history-making Filipinx Arts Night at KQED Live on December 1, 2022.
